As the livestreaming industry expands beyond its gaming roots, longtime Twitch personalityMitch Jones is discovering what happens when creators take greater control of the entertainment they produce. With more than a decade of experience connecting with online audiences, Jones is now channeling his creativity into large-scale interactive game shows, bringing together familiar personalities with professional production elements and real-time viewer participation.
His latest ventures reflect a recent change in digital entertainment, where independent creators are no longer limited to broadcasting from their bedrooms or relying on traditional media companies to bring ambitious concepts to life. Instead, Jones and his team are developing original programming that combines the spontaneity of livestreaming with the visual appeal of television.
Jones initially found a following through World of Warcraft broadcasts during Twitch’s formative years, establishing himself within the platform’s early gaming community in the 2010s. As his audience grew, he experimented with real-world experiences alongside his late friend and fellow streamer Byron “Reckful” Bernstein. These early endeavors proved that livestreaming audiences were interested in more than gameplay. Viewers developed connections with the individuals behind the broadcasts, becoming invested in friendships, personalities, and unscripted interactions.
Today, Jones is applying his IRL experiences to a considerably larger production environment. Working from a custom-built Los Angeles studio, he and his team have introduced professional lighting systems, expansive LED displays, and broadcast-quality equipment to support Jones’ ambitious projects. The space allows the team to experiment with entertainment formats that would have been difficult to execute during Jones’ early streaming career.
His first major game show, held in July and inspired by the television competition Deal or No Deal, was an initial test of that vision. Featuring fellow creators Sodapoppin, NMPLOL, and Bean, the production brought established online personalities together in a setting that encouraged unpredictability and audience engagement.
“I’m enjoying doing more IRL stuff lately. I had a lot of fun doing the last show, and seeing everything come together was one of my favorite things I’ve done recently,” Jones shared.
Unlike normal television competitions, however, Twitch viewers could participate through live chat, influence certain elements of the show, and help select mystery prizes. The experience also gave Jones an opportunity to evaluate the logistics of producing more elaborate broadcasts, from coordinating participants to integrating interactive technology. And with future productions in development, he is building on that foundation while introducing fresh personalities and expanding the creative possibilities of each event.
“Moving forward, I want to get in touch with people who have been there with me through my early streaming days and also gather people with different personalities,” Jones explained.
This highlights the importance of relationships within the creator economy. By reconnecting with longtime collaborators while welcoming new participants, Jones can introduce different dynamics without sacrificing the familiarity that initially attracted his audience. It also suggests a bigger opportunity for the streaming industry in that the next stage of livestream entertainment will depend more on the ability to showcase collaborative experiences that connect multiple communities. When established personalities appear together in interactive productions, their audiences gain a shared experience that reaches more people than a single channel. Creators can combine their reach, introduce fans to different personalities, and generate interest in programming that exists independently of their regular broadcasts.
Despite pursuing more sophisticated productions, Jones continues to engage with the community that has supported his career, balancing his regular streaming schedule with the development of larger projects. As he prepares for additional installments, including a recent October gameshow, he is focused on expanding the scale of his productions while preserving the personal connections that define his livestreaming.
“I’m looking forward to having those bigger shows,” Jones said.
